A vacation dress has a harder job than a normal one. It has to survive a suitcase, work from lunch to dinner, cope with heat, and look like you meant it in every photograph. These are the ones we would pack, cut in fabrics with enough weight to hang properly, in sizes XXS to XXL.
What makes a dress worth packing
Weight and recovery. A fabric with a little body falls out of a case with its shape intact, while anything stiff or very thin creases and stays creased. Roll rather than fold, and hang it in the bathroom while you shower on the first night.
Day to dinner without changing
Pick a dress that reads differently with two accessories. A slip with flat sandals and a tote is lunch. The same slip with an earring and a heel is dinner. That is the whole trick, and it is why one good dress beats three mediocre ones.
Heat, and what actually helps
Open backs and halters move air where it matters. Linings matter more than fibre content, because an unlined dress sticks and a lined one glides. Darker colours photograph better in bright sun than you would expect.
How many to take
Three dresses covers a week. One that works for daytime, one for dinner, one you would be happy to be photographed in. Everything else is a top and a trouser.
