An open back dress does all of its work from behind, which is exactly why it is worth owning one. Ours are covered at the front and cut away at the back, so the piece reads as considered rather than revealing. Every style is made in a limited run, in sizes XXS to XXL.
What to look for in a backless dress
The strap across the back matters more than the depth of the opening. A single strap or a tie keeps the dress where it should sit and lets you move without adjusting it all night. Check that the waist seam lands at your natural waist, because an open back pulls the eye to the line of the spine and a dropped waist breaks it.
What to wear underneath
Most open backs need a stick on or adhesive bra, or nothing at all if the dress is lined and cut close. Our Vela has a built in strap across the back, so a low back bra also works.
How to style it
Keep everything else quiet. One earring, hair up or swept to one side, a flat or a low heel. If you want it for a wedding or a dinner, add a blazer you can take off once you are sitting down.
